What's Wrong With This Picture?
British-led forces rescued three Christian peace activists from four months in captivity on Thursday after finding them tied up in a house in western Baghdad two weeks after an American colleague was killed.That's odd. That sounds more like a pick-up than a rescue.
No shots were fired and the kidnappers had fled.
"It's great to be free," rescued British hostage Norman Kember, 74, said after British and other forces freed him and Canadian colleagues Jim Loney, 41, and Harmeet Sooden, 32.Three men (one of them 74 years old!) are held for 4 months(!) and are released in "good shape," and "happy and relaxing," yet their colleague was shot, tortured and dumped in the street like a dog?
The tortured body of fellow activist, American Tom Fox, was found dumped in the capital two weeks ago.
A British embassy official said the three men were in "good shape" in the embassy. Kember was "happy and relaxing."
Something's wrong with this picture.
"We believe the illegal occupation of Iraq by multinational forces is the root cause of the insecurity which led to this kidnapping and so much pain and suffering in Iraq today. The occupation must end," the co-chairman of CPT Doug Pritchard told a news conference in Toronto.That says something about the men who were kidnapped and may explain why they were not harmed. But, was the fourth tortured and killed arbitrarily? It doesn't make sense.
Previous hostages, including Briton Kenneth Bigley in 2004, have been beheaded on video by al Qaeda-linked groups within weeks of their capture once demands have not been met.These kidnappings do not make sense together. Why would some hostages be released unharmed and others tortured and mutilated to death?
Something is terribly wrong with this picture.

UPDATE 3/25/06: this just in from The Age
It emerged that about 50 soldiers led by the British SAS, as well as American and Canadian special forces, entered the kidnap building at dawn.Draw your own conclusions.
A deal had been struck with a man detained the previous night who was one of the leaders of the kidnappers. He was allowed a telephone call to warn his henchmen to leave the house. [!!!]
When the troops moved in and found the prisoners alive, they also let him go as promised.
